Digital Unify

Throughout 2006 the Digital Unify has been again the program of highest priority for the Foundation to which most of our financial and human resources have been dedicated.

Italy The ICB has been cascaded in Catania and Agrate. The cascading goes on regularly in the computer training center that was set up at Ostuni, Brindisi, in collaboration with its Dioceses.

One new lab has been set up Italy, in the Secondigliano area, near Naples, in cooperation with a new local partner that is represented by “Il Cerchio Blu”, a catholic organization operating in the area. An ICBF was scheduled for mid July in order to become fully operational.

Malta Malta continues to achieve excellent results with 2 onsite computer training centers and 4 external training centers.

India Two labs are now fully operational and ICB training is regularly cascaded.

Malaysia ICB training has continued steadily throughout the year.

Tunisia In Tunisia we have 4 operational labs where our courses are cascaded on a regular basis.

Democratic Republic Congo In order to expand in countries where STMicroelectronics is not present, such as in Sub Saharan Africa, STFoundation has partnered with METID, (Metodi e Tecnologie Innovative per la Didattica), a part of the Polytechnic University of Milan, to set up two computer training centers in Bukavo and Birava.

Participation to UN Global Alliance & Networking

The Global Alliance was created at the beginning of 2006 as heir of the UN ICT Task Force and represents an opportunity for the UN system to come together around ICT, to promote the achievement of the internationally agreed development goals in partnership with all other stakeholders from governments, business and civil society. The Foundation is supporting this new initiative with its active participation during the first meeting that was held in Kuala Lumpur in June 2006.

The Foundation also participated at the 1st edition of the Economic Symposium ‘Investment Opportunities in Morocco’ that took place in September 2006 in Geneva; this event was organized by the Swiss Morocco Foundation for Sustainable Development (SMFD). The SMFD is a Non Governmental Organization (NGO) that has its headquarters in Geneva and it has to be considered as privileged entity between Switzerland and Morocco.

The Foundation is actively involved in reinforcing the existing link between Switzerland and Morocco and in supporting the realization of sustainable projects that have been selected.

Development Projects

“Children of Gujarat” Gift Matching Campaign and Water Project A new matching of 31,000 Euros has been made in 2006. A Health Care Centre had been built in front of the house of the Congregation. The construction is finished, but it is not equipped.

In order to integrate and strengthen the sanitary service for the villages, STFoundation has agreed to sponsor the equipment of the Health Care Centre with a delivery room and create a primary health care centre. The services provided will be the following: gynaecology assistance; postnatal and prenatal care; reproductive health care (RCH); periodical immunization; general health check up and the periodical treatment; eye and dental care; awareness and treatment of communicable diseases like malaria, typhoid, cholera; nutritional programme; HIV/AIDS awareness programme.

The 2006 donation has to be considered as the evolution of the first two matching made in 2004 and 2005 of the same amount and that where devoted to the water project in the Gujarat villages.

The gift matching for this campaign allowed the construction of an adequate water supply system for 4 villages.

In each village a committee for managing the water had been formed with the support of the social workers. The committees are composed of women and men and they have the complete responsibility for the water source in their village.

Principally, the committee decides the modalities of distributing water and the amount of the contribution that each family will give for covering the running costs of the infrastructures.

The committee of Motavarnora, where the activities had first started, made an agreement with the Electricity Department of Kutch district for the supply of electricity. In Motavarnora the infrastructures had been completed; besides the well and the water tank, four water stands were created.

The community deeply appreciated the results of the project; in particular the women expressed their joy, since now they can employ their time in doing other activities than fetching water. During the construction work, the rain caused a significant delay.

As part of the Gujarat Development project, the Foundation has agreed to the funding of a Computer and Vocational Training Center in Gujarat in the village of Lodai next to the house of the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary who run the CIAI program there.

The donation will cover costs of construction and furnishing of a full-fledged training center consisting of one office, 4 classrooms, one computer center and kiosk.

The center will be used to continue training of children after school hours, to provide their mothers with vocational training classes, and to provide them and the local community with computer skills and internet access through the Digital Unify program.
