Italy

The DU Italy Team is a very tight knit, enthusiastic group of motivated ST people sharing the values set forth by ST culture, which involve commitment to contributing to sustainable development through social responsibility.

Computer literacy courses (ICB and ICBF) were born in Catania in 2002, from the joint work by the IT group and STUniversity.

Many of the first ICB trainers who then contributed to spread DU around the world were formed here. Italian DU key trainers still travel to remote parts of the word in order to start up the “Train the trainer” program and form new trainers to the Program.

Agrate ICB

Agrate and Castelletto, which host ST R&D, design and industrial centers, are home to another active joint DU Team, who is relentlessly working on organizing new computer literacy courses.

In the past months, both external ICB courses and internal ones were organized. The latter target families and relatives of ST colleagues.
They take place in the evening hours, outside working hours or on Saturday mornings.

External courses, on the other hand, are organized not only in Agrate, but also in neighbouring towns and villages typically targeting elderly people and immigrants not having access to nor knowledge of the PC.

Partner schools or associations typically provide a computer room for the training. The ICB course is delivered by ST trainers, together with a copy of the ICB manual. Courses are organized in ten sessions, of two hours each. At the end of the course, participants are awarded a frequency certificate.

A feedback form filled in by participants has proved a widespread satisfaction with regard to the course. This has enabled organizers to receive suggestions and envisage possible adjustments to the course for the future, such as expanding the time dedicated to internet surfing and practical exercises.

In 2009, a project in cooperation with the prison in Bollate was launched in order for prisoners to profit from digital literacy. The pilot course has been an enriching experience for ST volunteers and aroused great appreciation by the beneficiaries. To learn more about it, check our testimonies section or watch the video. The program is currently ongoing

DU Italy has trained over 1300 trainees since its inception.
