Empowering people with visual impairments through digital skills: our new program in Malawi
We are proud to present our latest initiative in Malawi, marking an important expansion of our mission to promote digital inclusion for people with visual impairments.
In collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Malawi Government, this pioneering 2-week training program equips visually impaired individuals with essential digital skills and access to assistive technologies, empowering greater independence and opening new opportunities.
The official launch ceremony took place on November 10th, at the Malawi School of Government in Kanengo, in the capital Lilongwe. This event celebrated inclusive innovation and the power of partnerships to create a more equitable digital future. Our representatives together with those from UNDP, and the Malawi Government joined forces to highlight the importance of assistive technologies and skill development for people with disabilities.
Held from November 10 to 28, 2025, the program was carefully structured to maximize its impact. Seven visually impaired trainers led the sessions, supported by seven sighted assistants. Although originally planned for 20 participants, the program successfully trained 28 individuals — including 14 visually impaired trainees and 14 sighted assistants.
The training was expertly facilitated by Prof. Christian Bernareggi over two weeks, with Sada Kane providing extended support for three weeks as our focal point for the DTC-ITU activities and main referent for the ICBVI program in Africa. “This inclusive approach not only enhanced the learning experience for trainees but also empowered their assistants, fostering a collaborative environment built on mutual support and understanding”, said Sada.
At the closing ceremony on November 28, participants showcased their newly acquired skills and celebrated their achievements. This milestone marks the beginning of a sustained effort to integrate assistive digital technologies into the daily lives of people with visual impairments across Malawi.
Malawi joins a growing list of countries benefiting from the Inclusive Community-Based Digital Skills Training for Visually Impaired (ICB4VI) initiative, which has been expanding since 2019. Previous countries include Sierra Leone, Senegal, Ghana, Pakistan, India, and Uganda. This progression highlights our commitment to fostering digital equity worldwide by leveraging partnerships to create scalable and sustainable impact.
The collaboration between UNDP, the Malawi Government, and us exemplifies how inclusive innovation and effective ecosystem and partnership can transform lives. By equipping individuals with visual impairments with the tools and skills needed to thrive in a digital world, this initiative paves the way for a future where technology truly serves everyone.
