The Introduction to Computer Basics for visually impaired people (ICB4VI)
Originally developed to address the needs of Sierra Leone, our ICB4VI course has since become a pivotal educational tool for the visually impaired community. With the expertise of Dr. Bernareggi from the State University of Milan, this tailored path was initiated to make digital skills accessible to visually impaired learners. Launched in October 2019, the course is structured into 24 lessons totaling 48 hours. The curriculum is divided into six comprehensive modules designed to enhance digital literacy comprehensively. These include:
- Basic computer navigation using keyboard shortcuts, which provides a foundational understanding of PC operation without relying on visual cues.
- Document creation and management in Microsoft Word, focusing on accessible features and techniques suitable for visually impaired users.
- Data organization and calculation tasks in Microsoft Excel, tailored to be user-friendly for those with visual impairments.
- Email setup and management, teaching students how to communicate using standard email tools and applications effectively.
- Internet navigation skills, enabling safe and efficient browsing adapted to the needs of these particular beneficiaries.
- Customizable modules are adjusted based on individual or group needs, ensuring relevance and practicality in various contexts.
Following its successful implementation, the ICB4VI course is ready for expansion into additional regions. It has also been established as a core initiative in collaboration with the ITU, focusing on enhancing the digital literacy of this particular target group. The goal is to integrate them into the e-society we all live in, ensuring they acquire the necessary skills to thrive in a digitally driven world.
