Bridging the digital divide in India with Tablets for Kids

Digital literacy is essential in today’s world, enhancing educational opportunities and personal growth. Recognizing this, we launched the “Tablets for Kids” (T4K) project in collaboration with Seva Mandir. This initiative aims to bridge the digital divide by providing free tablets and basic training to children with no prior digital knowledge, as part of the broader Digital Unify Program.

These are our project objectives:

  1. Access to technology:provide modern digital technology to children and instructors in deprived communities.
  2. Training workshops:conduct comprehensive training for instructors and children to use tablets effectively.
  3. Empower instructors:equip instructors with skills to teach digital literacy in local educational centers lcalled “
  4. Bridge the digital divide:offer digital knowledge and resources to underserved communities.

The project started with training workshops for instructors, focusing on tablet use and digital technology. These instructors then taught the children at the center, fostering enthusiasm and engagement with new digital tools. The goal was to equip instructors with the skills needed to effectively teach digital literacy in their Shiksha Kendras.

We started with two tribal communities in the Udaipur district: 55 children enrolled in the T4K program at Basiwada, a village with significant challenges due to its isolation and lack of resources, and 48 children enrolled in Rama, another village facing similar challenges. The Shiksha kendras have been crucial in providing education in both villages.

The initial phase of the T4K project shows promising results, with enthusiastic reception from children and instructors. The structured syllabus on tablets ensures comprehensive digital literacy. The project not only addresses immediate digital literacy needs but also lays the foundation for long-term educational and personal development.

Looking ahead, together with Seva Mandir we plan to expand the T4K project to more villages, aiming to reach as many children and instructors as possible. The goal is to create a digitally literate generation that can leverage technology for personal and community growth.
