Two exciting new programs launched this summer in India!

We are thrilled to announce the launch of two transformative programs: Tablet for Kids (T4K) and Introduction to Computer Basics (ICB) in the Murshidabad and Uttar Dinajpur districts of West Bengal, India.

These initiatives became possible thanks to the active collaboration of SMOKUS, an India-based non-profit organization working since 1994 to protect children’s and women’s rights.

Tablet for Kids (T4K): This innovative tablet-based digital literacy program targets children aged 9-14, empowering them with essential modern science and technology skills to bridge the digital divide in underprivileged communities. We chose Murshidabad, an educationally underserved district with poor female literacy rates, actually one of the most underdeveloped areas in West Bengal. The lack of major industries and employment opportunities has led to low per capita income and mass migration.

The T4K program will create new opportunities for 350 children, equipping them with vital digital skills and transforming them into tech-savvy individuals. Launched at the Krishnasail Education Center in the Raghunathganj II block, this project is a first-of-its-kind for these children, giving them the chance to independently use tablets and gain crucial digital literacy.

Informatics and Computer Basics (ICB): This modular course is tailored for children over 14, providing them with foundational knowledge in informatics and computer basics, along with essential digital skills for the modern world.

We chose Uttar Dinajpur, a district near the Bangladesh border, known for its challenges with human trafficking, high rates of child labor, and unsafe migration.

The ICB program, initiated at the Bindole Support Education Center, has equipped the facility with laptops and an LED TV for session displays. This initiative will impact 400 students over the year, enhancing their digital literacy and opening doors to better career prospects.

Most high schools and colleges in these areas lack the infrastructure for digital skills training, limiting learning opportunities. Access to a computer lab with curated IT courses will help students develop essential digital and soft skills, making them more employable and opening new avenues for gainful employment for youth aged 18-25.

A special thanks to Terre des Hommes Suisse (TDH) for facilitating the dialogue and partnership with their local partner, SMOKUS, to create sustainable impacts.

Together, we are building a brighter, more inclusive future for these communities.
