Bridging the digital divide: setting Wi-Fi for education in Africa
At the ST Foundation, we recently embarked on a mission to establish robust connectivity for digital education, ensuring that our lab activities run smoothly across Africa. In fact, it is not only about digital education; it is also about providing the basic infrastructure to support it. We mentioned the difficulties we encountered during our last trip to Africa (read the full story here): thanks to our efforts, Starlink’s Wi-Fi infrastructure is now supporting education in Burundi and Sierra Leone, opening new possibilities for students in remote areas.
In Burundi, classrooms are already buzzing with activity. Students are exploring subjects they never had access to before, and teachers are discovering innovative ways to engage their classes. The internet connection is making learning more interactive and enjoyable, truly revolutionizing the educational experience in these communities.
Sierra Leone is experiencing a similar transformation. We have successfully installed Wi-Fi at the Holy Family School in Freetown, home to our 11-PC Digital Unify Lab. Previously hindered by connectivity issues, the school now enjoys smooth and fast internet access.
Reflecting on the impact, Mohamed, our Country Manager for Sierra Leone, states: “While solid infrastructure is often taken for granted in Western countries, it represents a significant step forward for us in Africa’s remote areas. The ST Foundation’s support extends beyond technology; it’s about empowering children to dream big and reach their potential.”
