Helping seniors in Singapore find confidence in a digital world
When seniors first joined our Tablet for Seniors (T4S) program in Singapore, many arrived with curiosity — and a little hesitation. Some wanted to use their tablets more confidently, while others hoped to better understand everyday apps that could make life easier. Many also worried about “pressing the wrong button” and making mistakes.
What stood out most was their eagerness to learn. From the youngest participant at 65 to the oldest at 85, the seniors showed that learning truly has no age limit — or as the Chinese saying goes, 活到老,学到老 — learn as long as you live. That spirit of lifelong learning became the foundation for something bigger.
Originally built around a global curriculum, T4S was refreshed after several runs to better reflect the realities of seniors in Singapore; from the digital tools they use daily to the online risks they increasingly face. Over six months, our volunteers in Singapore revamped the curriculum to help seniors become smart, connected, and confident in a digital Singapore.
The refreshed program ran over two 5-session batches, reaching 20 seniors in total. Lessons began with the basics, including tablet functions, Calendar, Alarm, Weather, Calculator, Gmail, and Emergency SOS, before moving into practical apps such as Google Maps, Grab, FairPrice, Shopee, and MyTransport.SG. Many seniors were especially eager to learn about shopping and food delivery apps, showing how meaningful digital learning becomes when it connects to daily life.
To make learning less intimidating, the sessions used simple step-by-step instructions, hands-on practice, and mini challenges. Over time, hesitation gave way to confidence.
The curriculum also included digital safety and scam awareness. Seniors learned about suspicious emails, social media scams, and AI-generated deepfakes through interactive “Real or AI” activities. They also explored tools like ChatGPT and Gemini, gaining a practical introduction to AI while understanding its opportunities and risks.
To support learning at home, the team created cheat sheets for each session. Jessica shared: “Thank you so much for the printed materials. They are very good, useful and helpful for our reference just in case we forget.” Jeffrey added: “The training materials provided were structured beautifully, serving as both excellent guide during the class and a valuable reference for the future. The trainers’ approach was also exceptionally clear and engaging, making complex concepts easy to grasp.”
More than digital skills, the program gave seniors confidence in using technology and in themselves. Thank you to Care Corner and all our volunteers for making it possible.
