Bridging gaps: digital learning behind bars
Imagine the power of using knowledge to break down walls—not just physical ones, but the invisible barriers of isolation, doubt, and lost opportunity. This is the mission at the heart of our Basic Computer Courses, held in the prisons of Arienzo and Santa Maria di Capua Vetere this year, in Italy.
More than a training program, this initiative offers people who are incarcerated practical digital skills that open doors to education, employment, and social reintegration. Yet, what truly defines this project is the human connection built during each session—where technology meets empathy, and learning becomes a shared journey of respect, understanding, and renewal.
From April to July 2025, a dedicated team of volunteers from the STMicroelectronics offices in Arzano and Marcianise, Italy — committed their time and energy to bring this vision to life. Over these months, classrooms within the penitentiary walls were transformed into spaces where empowerment and opportunity took root.
Volunteers go beyond their everyday roles to become mentors and catalysts for change. Each lesson transcends the simple transfer of knowledge — it becomes a meaningful dialogue where life stories are shared, barriers are broken down, and dignity is restored.
“For individuals impacted by the justice system, these courses represent more than just skill-building; they provide a chance to feel valued and empowered, to imagine a future where they contribute positively to society”, said Vincenzo D’Ambrosio, course coordinator with Paolo Mastroianni.
“For the volunteers, the experience is a powerful reminder of our shared humanity and the potential for growth and change in every individual”.
