Rajan – you never forget your first Word
Rajan is 11 years old and lives in JJ Colony, Bawana, Delhi — an area where daily life is marked by economic and social challenges.
At home, there is only one smartphone, used solely for calls and messages: far too little to satisfy the curiosity of an enterprising young boy like him. Until recently, technology seemed distant, almost forbidden. Rajan pictured himself destined only for household chores and daily responsibilities. But then, his life took an unexpected turn!
With strength and determination, Rajan decided to enroll in a digital literacy course promoted by the Navjyoti India Foundation and in collaboration with us. At first, he was scared: afraid of pressing the wrong button, of breaking something. Yet the idea of gaining digital skills fascinated him, and with every passing moment, he realized he was not just learning much more than just how to use the internet.
His teacher, Anjali, is proud of him: “His story shows how digital education helped him overcome difficulties and build a better future.” “The support from Anjali was fundamental,” Rajan said, “as was the support from my classmates. If anyone fell behind, the others would always wait and help.”
Today, Rajan knows how to use Excel to manage his family’s budget, write letters on Word, watch YouTube tutorials to learn new things, send emails, and share photos with relatives far away. His new digital skills have transformed him: he feels more confident, independent, and ready to apply for jobs as a receptionist or data entry operator. But above all, he has gained a new sense of self-confidence.
His fondest memory? The day he created his very first Word document all by himself, the smile that lit up his face in that moment is something he will never forget.
If he could speak to his past self, timid and full of doubts, he would say: “Don’t be afraid. Just take the first step.” It seems he wasn’t just learning how to use the internet…
