When code opens doors: empowering young people to shape their future
At the beginning of July, seven young people accompanied by the Mission Locale du Gresivaudan (Crolles, France), walked into the training room where computers and small Mars Robot kits developed by Vittascience in collaboration with STMicroelectronics were waiting on the tables.
They came from different backgrounds, with different stories and different levels of confidence. Some had never coded before.
All were curious, enthusiastic, and eager to discover the activity and explore new skills.
Since our creation, we have worked to reduce digital inequality by giving people the knowledge, skills, and confidence they need to shape their own future.This is why we partnered with the Mission Locale du Grésivaudan to create a pilot workshop on coding, robotics, and electronics, with the support of STEM ambassadors from STMicroelectronics France. The goal was not only to teach technology. It was also to listen, learn, and adapt the program to the real needs of the participants.
They learned basic programming concepts. They explored embedded systems. They worked in teams. Most importantly, they became engineers for an afternoon. Their mission was to program a robot designed to operate in an environment where humans could not go.
Step by step, they solved problems, they tested ideas, they made mistakes, they tried again. And suddenly, the robots moved. The code they had written became action. Technology was no longer something distant. It was something they could understand and control. By the end of the session, all four teams had successfully completed the challenge. More importantly, something else had happened, confidence had grown.
The young “scientists” spoke about the pleasure of learning through practice. They enjoyed the mix of learning and fun. They said the explanations were clear. They wanted more time. They wanted to go further. They wanted to learn more.
This is what bridging the digital divide looks like.Not only access to technology: access to opportunity, to skills, to choice.For us, when people gain digital skills, they gain the power to make decisions, explore careers, and build their future. Technology becomes a door that opens rather than a barrier that excludes.The success of this first workshop showed what is possible when technology, education, and human connection come together. It created bridges between young people and industry. It revealed talents. It inspired new ambitions.
And the story does not end here. New sessions are already being planned to inspire and engage more young people in Isère and over France country.
