A bridge to independence for young people with learning disabilities

A bridge to independence for young people with learning disabilities

Using email, searching online, or creating a document is part of everyday life. For many people with learning disabilities, these skills can be the key to greater independence.

Since its creation, our Foundation has worked to reduce digital and technological inequality and to give people the tools they need to shape their future, regardless of their background or abilities. Our collaboration with AFIPH and the DIME AGSI – Les 3 Saules center in France led to the launch of a new pilot program.

Seven young learners took part in our ICB course (Introduction to Computer Basics). Thanks to the support of our founder company, STMicroelectronics, we provided laptops, training materials and guidance throughout the program.

The journey was sometimes challenging, but their determination never faded. Knowing there would be a test and a certificate at the end kept them motivated, and every participant successfully passed. Their certificates were more than a reward: they were proof of new abilities, growing confidence, and a well-earned achievement.

The impact went far beyond digital skills. Learners supported one another, built friendships, and gained confidence in their ability to learn and succeed. Maxence quickly applied his new skills during an internship, using email to communicate with his employer and AI tools to support his work.

Their feedback speaks for itself. On the day they received their certificates, the learners were asked what they would remember most from the ICB course. Their answers were simple, authentic, and powerful: learning, teamwork, discovery, and enjoyment.

Michael, the AFIPH educator who facilitated the course, and his colleague Justine witnessed the transformation firsthand. They confirmed that “the young people found real value in their daily lives and for their future projects” and that “this action enabled them to develop their digital skills, gain autonomy and build confidence in their ability to use digital tools.” They described the learners as curious, engaged, and enthusiastic throughout the program, which consisted of 10 two-hour sessions over more than three months.

The journey culminated on June 16 with a certificate ceremony attended by AFIPH leaders, educators, and Emmanuelle Luce, our France Country Leader. One by one, the learners received their certificates and were applauded for their perseverance and success. For many, it was the first formal recognition of skills they had worked hard to develop.

Well done to Maxence, Théo, Adriana, Célia, Paris, Tifany, and Enzo for their tenacity and for successfully completing the program. As each learner stepped forward to receive a certificate, the room celebrated much more than digital skills. It celebrated determination, growth, and new possibilities.

The success of this pilot program has already led AFIPH to plan new sessions and consider expanding the program to other centers. Special congratulations to the educators, whose dedication made this project a success. Their feedback will help us adapt our ICB course for people with learning disabilities and guide other non-profit organizations that choose to partner with us.
