The Context
As of 2025, India, with a population of approximately 1.46 billion, stands as the most populous country in the world. It remains a land of immense diversity and opportunity, where education continues to play a vital role in national development. The Right to Education Act guarantees free and compulsory schooling for children aged 6 to 14, laying the foundation for progress across the country.
India’s educational landscape is as diverse as its population, with instruction delivered in Hindi, English, and numerous regional languages. Secondary education builds upon this multilingual base, culminating in national examinations that provide access to higher education or professional pathways. With more than 1,100 universities and over 55,000 colleges, India has one of the largest higher education systems globally. Vocational training complements this framework, equipping students with practical skills tailored to a wide range of industries.
Despite this progress, challenges persist. Rural and underserved regions still face limited infrastructure, teacher shortages, and gaps in learning outcomes. In response, the Indian government has continued to invest in digital transformation. Through initiatives like the Digital India campaign and increased funding in 2024, the country has expanded access to e-learning platforms, smart classrooms, and teacher training programs. These efforts aim to bridge the urban-rural divide and foster inclusive, technology-enabled learning.
In India, education remains a powerful tool for empowerment and a driving force behind the nation’s efforts to unlock its vast human potential.
ST Foundation’s Presence
The Digital Unify (DU) Program was launched in India in 2003, with support from the STMicroelectronics plant in Greater Noida and the strong commitment of its volunteers. From the outset, the initiative aimed to expand access to education by providing digital skills and learning resources that were largely unavailable in many communities.
Over the years, the program has grown, reaching an increasing number of learners nationwide. This long-term development and its local roots led to the establishment of ST Foundation India as an independent legal entity in 2018, further strengthening the program’s structure and scalability.
From its early stages, the Foundation introduced key training courses, including Introduction to Computer Basics (ICB), Tablet for Kids (T4K), and a range of advanced modules, supporting learners along progressive educational pathways. Over time, the program continued to evolve, introducing new initiatives to respond to emerging needs. Among these, the Tablet for Seniors (T4S) course played an important role in helping older adults stay connected and confident in an increasingly digital world.
In December 2024, the Foundation also organized a Train-the-Trainer session on the Introduction to Computer Basics for Visually Impaired People (ICB4VI), led by Professor Cristian Bernareggi, with support from master trainer Sada Kane. This initiative represents an important step toward expanding inclusive digital education for visually impaired learners in India.
As of the end of March 2026, the program has reached more than 183,000 beneficiaries, reflecting its sustained growth and long-term commitment to bridging the digital divide across diverse communities.
