When learning becomes strength: the story of Nargis

When learning becomes strength: the story of Nargis
In Bawana JJ Colony, Delhi, Nargis, a 24-year-old mother of two, once believed computers had no place in her life. “Before this course, I didn’t even know the ABCs of computers,” she admits. “I had heard about them, but family responsibilities always came first.”

Everything changed when she joined the Computer Basics (ICB) learning program supported by the ST Foundation and delivered by the Navjyoti India Foundation. For the first time, Nargis sat in front of a computer, hesitant at first but soon curious and eager to learn.

During the course, she mastered key digital tools: writing in Notepad, using keyboard shortcuts, building timetables in Excel, calculating totals, and even designing PowerPoint presentations. Some days, family duties kept her from class, but she never gave up.

“Whenever I missed a session, I made sure to catch up. That gave me a great sense of achievement,” she says proudly.

Her trainer, Anjali Ma’am, supported her patiently, explaining each concept clearly. When Nargis tried to thank her in person, Anjali smiled and said, “Thank the ST Foundation instead, they made this possible.”

Today, Nargis uses her new skills with confidence. She can manage household tasks digitally and help her children with schoolwork. “This course changed me,” she says. “Now I want to continue with advanced classes so I can grow even more.”

From not knowing how to switch on a computer to mastering Excel, Nargis’s journey reflects what digital inclusion truly means: empowerment, resilience, and the courage to start again.
