In partnership with the Navjyoti India Foundation, a renowned NGO with deep connections in local communities, we embarked on an innovative project to bridge the digital divide. Sharing a common objective, we launched the Mobile T4K Lab —”Tablet for Kids on Wheels”— in 2022. This initiative aims to bring technology directly to children in marginalized and slum areas of Delhi and the surrounding regions, with the support of various grassroots and local NGO partners.
The pilot run of the Mobile T4K Lab was met with overwhelming enthusiasm. Children in these underserved communities were thrilled to have access to technology right at their doorsteps. The sight of the mobile lab arriving in their neighborhoods became a beacon of hope and excitement. Over the past two years, this initiative has been a resounding success, reaching 1700+ deserving and underprivileged kids in Delhi’s slums. Our approach has widened opportunities for these children, enabling them to use technology to enhance their knowledge and learning.
Given the success in Delhi, we decided to expand the same model to other underserved areas. In February 2024, we initiated a second “T4K on Wheels” project, focusing on villages and underserved areas in Noida and Greater Noida, close to our ST Foundation and STMicroelectronics offices. This expansion was driven by our commitment to replicate the positive impact witnessed in Delhi and to ensure that more children could benefit from this transformative initiative.
The dedicated trainers play a crucial role in this initiative. Each day, they visit a central location to collect and check all tablets and related assets. They then transport these resources to the community, where they conduct engaging and educational sessions. The identification of suitable locations is done through community mobilization and collaboration with grassroots and local NGOs. These trainers not only impart technical skills but also inspire and motivate the children to dream bigger and aim higher.
The success of the Mobile T4K Lab is deeply rooted in community engagement. By working closely with local NGOs and community leaders, we ensure that the project is tailored to meet the specific needs of each area. This collaborative approach has fostered a sense of ownership and pride among community members, further enhancing the project’s impact.
The children, many of whom had never interacted with digital devices before, are now adept at using tablets for learning and exploration. Parents and guardians have also expressed their gratitude, noting the positive changes in their children’s attitudes towards education and their newfound enthusiasm for learning.
Looking ahead, we have ambitious plans to further expand the Mobile T4K Lab initiative. We aim to reach even more remote and underserved areas, ensuring that no child is left behind in the digital age. We are exploring partnerships with additional NGOs and community organizations to scale the project and maximize its impact.
