Tiny tablets, big dreams: Burundi kids go digital
In the heart of Burundi, at the Giheta Digital Unify Center, a new journey is shaping the future of young learners through digital education. Our “Tablets for Kids” (T4K) program, specially designed for children under 12 years old, completed its first successful session in May. Now, thanks to the recent re-establishment of the Starlink internet connection, which resolved the primary connectivity issue in this remote area of Burundi, this program is moving ahead at full speed, reaching more children than ever before.
“In today’s digital world, our Burundian children encounter tablets and digital devices everywhere—from their homes to schools and community centers” Rene Michel Munyembari – ST Foundation country manager for Burundi comments. “Recognizing this, the T4K program equips children aged 8 to 13 with essential digital literacy skills. The training goes beyond simple skills; it teaches children how to harness tablets as powerful tools for learning and creativity. During the course, children discover exciting activities such as drawing on tablets, which sparks their imagination and nurtures their artistic talents. More importantly, they learn to use technology safely and confidently, preparing them for a future where digital skills are indispensable.
This initiative marks a significant expansion, as the center previously focused primarily on older students, typically aged 14 and above. And with the support of dedicated teachers, we strongly encourage local communities to enroll their children in this course.”
