Sierra Leone is one of the poorest countries in the world. After being devastated by various conflicts and wars, Sierra Leone is one of the least developed countries and is considered one of the world’s poorest and in debt economies.
Statistical data shows that out of a population of approximately 6 million people, over 100,000 people in the country are blind, and the number grows even more if the visually impaired are taken into consideration. In the context of Sierra Leone, as we can imagine, the challenges that the blind and visually impaired are facing are severe, as they are often unable to access education or earn a living. They experience various forms of discrimination and neglect.
This unfortunate combination of circumstances on one side and the fantastic support of Sustain for Life (an English NGO whose mission is to better the world one community at a time) lead us to prepare and test a new educational path: The Introduction to Computer Basics Course for Visually Impaired People (ICBVI).
In October 2019, we tested the new training material, prepared by Dr. Bernareggi, at Milton Margai School for the Blind, in Freetown. The testing phase ended on February 17th, 2020, with the certificate distribution ceremony for the first ten students of our new course.
We hope to contribute even more to the fight against the digital divide through this new educational path.
